Savi’s Workshop

Welcome back friends to Muting and The Mouse! We are heading back to Walt Disney World Resort for this post. The beauty of the resort is that no matter where you are in the parks, it is super well themed.  We are going to escape into the magic of Disney’s Hollywood Studios for a must do for the big Star Wars fans. As you head into Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge, you really enter the story, and that is what the magic is about today. I was blessed and able to have gotten a time slot to build my own lightsaber. You can get this experience at Savi’s Workshop found in Galaxy’s Edge. I was also blessed to accompany some friends on this past trip and experience it again to purely enjoy what was happening. I had chills both times and if you are okay with fronting the bills over for this once in a lifetime experience, it is a must. The price of the experience was just raised to $219.99. This includes your custom hand built lightsaber and the once in a lifetime experience to make it. For me, yes, it was worth it. I had a blast and it was everything I thought it would be. Take into consideration that lightsabers are in the $170 ish range and the fact you get a custom one with a personal experience- it all adds up. To me, that was worth it! But before I ramble too long, let’s dive into some of the experience to let you know what to expect!

Booking A Time Slot

This can be done on the My Disney Experience App or on Disney’s website. Just search for Savi’s Workshop Handbuilt Lightsabers. Once you get to the page, you can hit the section where it says “check availability”. There you can pick your dates and time if available. You can book them 60 days out and I suggest you do that as soon as possible. If you are looking at doing this, the time slots sell out quickly so hop on it. Once you pick your time, you fill out the information they ask and it should pop up on your plans page on the My Disney Experience App.

Arriving to Savi’s and beginning steps

Once you arrive in Galaxy’s Edge, head over to the workshop just a bit early. I recommend like 15 min early just to ensure you are ready to go. Once you get there, talk to a cast member and they will tell you what to do. Then you will pay and let them know which theme you would like your lightsaber to resemble. There are four of them to choose from. You can see the descriptions below taken from Disney’s Website.

  • Peace and Justice
Salvaged scraps from fallen Jedi temples and crashed starships in these Republic-era designs honor the galaxy’s former guardians.
  • Power and Control
Originally forged by dark side warriors, this style features rumored remnants from the Sith homeworld and abandoned temples.
  • Elemental Nature
This theme embodies the Force—an energy created by all living things, like Brylark trees, Cartusion whale bones and Rancor teeth.
  • Protection and Defense
Hilt materials bear mysterious motifs and inscriptions that reconnect users with the ancient wellspring of the Force

I chose Peace and Justice. They give you a pin to commemorate which choice you made and they tell you to wear it. Make sure you keep this handy, as it tells the scavengers and collectors which parts to get you. After this, they will assign you a number to stand on and it is time to wait until you go inside to build your lightsaber.

Building the light saber

Once you get inside, the scavengers will give you a station to build your saber and the experience is underway. Once everyone is in, you meet the person who is going to lead the way in light saber making. They welcome you in and then give you a history of the jedi order and the lightsaber. Asking questions along the way where you can participate, this is a fully immersive part. They explain the kyber crystals and how they are the heart of the saber. Each color they have there has a story behind it. They explain what jedi used the colors and the effects are awesome during this part. After that, they explain that they have gathered all kinds of items for the lightsaber building. You get to choose from four colors. The colors are blue, green, purple, and red. I chose blue! From there, they put out some parts in front of you that correspond to which theme you chose. You get to choose from the following.

  • 1 hilt
  • 4 sleeves (pick 2)
  • 2 emitters (pick 1)
  • 2 pommel caps (pick 1)
  • 2 sets of activation plates and switches (pick 1 set)

Once you have done this, your saber is complete. You insert the kyber crystal at the beginning and build around it from there. After you are done, you set it on a plate in front of you and wait for others to finish. Then once everyone is done, they explain that it is time to bring the saber to life. There you are interrupted for a moment. I will not spoil the surprise, but it gave me chills. Then the scavengers take your saber and insert it off to the side for activation. This is what really makes it all worth it. You are to activate your saber and on the count of three you are instructed to lift your saber into the air. The whole room is filled with awe as the room is illuminated by all of the lightsabers. The personalized lightsaber is complete and there is a part where they explain that now you are part of the Star Wars story. As you leave, you are given a nice carrying case to store the saber in. That completes building a lightsaber.

For me, this was an experience that is once in a lifetime. The experience is so fun and really puts you into the story. Everyone who is a Star Wars fan really wants to fly the Millenium Falcon and build a lightsaber. You can do both in Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge and that is just awesome. I have my saber displayed in the house and it is really awesome. Have you been to Savi’s Workshop? Do you want to build your own? Let us know in the comments below! This is one way to escape into the magic while at Disney, and I hope this helps you decide if it is right for you. Until next time, continue to escape into the magic, no matter how far!

  1. This was by far one of the greatest experiences ever! I watched my husband partake in this and took a million and a half pictures and videos of him while wiping tears away from my eyes. He was 7 when the first Star Wars movie came out and has been obsessed since day one. Watching him get to experience what every Star Wars fan dreams of doing (yielding a real light saber!) was one of the best moments of my life. I cannot agree with you more! This is 100% a must do for any Star Wars fan.
